Hour of Code

Rice Creek Elementary has signed up to participate in the Hour of Code next week, December 7-11. This is a global movement to introduce students to computer science engineering with an emphasis on how to write basic computer code. Students in grades CD-2 will partner with students in grades 3-5 to collaborate on writing blockly style computer code to make a "video game" work.

Please encourage your child(ren) to practice coding at home as it promotes critical thinking skills as well.

For more information on this global event, please visit the website at https://hourofcode.com.

Thank you for your support.

Student Council Community Service

The RCE Student Council has decided to adopt some families in need this holiday season.  They ask each child in grades k-5 to bring in only $1.  If everyone brings in just $1, then we'll have over $600 and can help as many as 6 families.

Week of October 19 - 21

Thank you for your flexibility as we had 2-hour delay this week.  We will continue to operate on a delayed schedule next week, but only of 1hour.  We will be on a 1-hour delay next week.  As noted in the district messages, many of our bus routes have changed due to road closures and repairs.  We have been fortunate in  our immediate area not to have experienced as much damage, but unfortunately that is not the case in other parts of the district.

The one hour delay and extra week off have created two changes in our school year - so far.  Please understand there will be more changes required as we make up for the "lost" week.  One immediate change is Wednesday, October 21 will now be a complete school day - less one hour, instead of an early dismissal day.  This helps us to make up some of the instructional time missed due to the delayed starts.  Dismissal will be at 2:50 on Wednesday, October 21st.  Report cards are also being pushed back a week and will not be issued until November 5.  Please check Parent Portal for updates on grades and contact us with any questions before Wednesday, October 21.

Thank you to everyone who has come in for a conference!  We really enjoyed meeting each of you.  Thank you also to the parents who are having to wait to reschedule conferences we had scheduled during the flooding - we had appointments and meetings previously scheduled for this past week and could not use the afternoons to make up conferences.  We have added more spots to the conference signup.   Please select a time to come and meet with us!

We hope everyone is dry and safe!  The amount of rain and flooding is unprecedented.  Please keep us informed if anyone needs assistance!

Other than the rain it was another fantastic week at the Creek!  We had visits from AVID and Mrs. Thompson.  The students showed off their AVID skills for the visitors - demonstrating note taking, collaboration with a group or partner, and organizational skills.  Mrs. Thompson worked with the students on active listening, explaining that listening does not just happen with our ears - we need to use our entire bodies to show speakers we are listening.

Many parents are asking for ways to assist students with math homework.  The students should be bringing home their math journals; the notes in the journals have problems similar to the ones on the homework.  However, I know the drawings are very different from the way many of us learned math - the link below should help you to help them.  We are on Module 1 and currently in Topic C.  Let me know if you need any other resources.

Parent Resource for Math

Mrs. Pennekamp and Mrs. Corn would still like everyone to sign up for a conference.  Right now we have limited slots available on the website, Sign Up Genius, but are willing to work to meet with you.
Please sign up!  If a time you need is not available, please contact one of us for a time and date.

9/25/15

Apologies for a late update.  We have been busy with parent conferences and rolling along with learning.  The ID pictures were not taken on Wednesday and have been rescheduled for Monday, September 28.  The link to schedule a conference is below, as well as a message from the district about helping students succeed.  Please remember to check agendas nightly and communication folders on Thursday.  Students should be reading nightly and have two books - one in their Lexile range and one choice book.  We go to the library every week to check out books.  Students should be bringing home their math folders nightly.

School Day Success Starts the Night Before

Thursday, September 17, 2015

We have had another wonderful week at the Creek.  Mrs. Pennekamp's class went to the Lexington Museum on Tuesday and had a wonderful time!  Mrs. Corn's homeroom is looking forward to going tomorrow.  We celebrated Constitution Day today by learning about the Constitution - a little preview of what is coming in US history.  Next week is another busy week.  Is anyone else beginning to see a pattern? Or is just the math teacher in me?

Please remember to check agendas daily and read with your child.  We have started Reading Counts and students can earn prizes from the Media Center for points earned.  Students should be reading at least one book on their lexile range - most of the students should have their new lexile ranges in their reading journals.

On Wednesday, September 23rd,  students will be able to have laminated photo id cards made. Parents, please complete the front and back of each card you would like to purchase and return the envelope to your child's teacher before the 23rd.  The cost of the cards are on the envelope.  The cards will be sent home with your student that day.

Thursday,  September 24th is a half day. We will begin Parent conferences on that day.  Please sign up using Sign-Up Genius and the link sent to you in the email.  You may also click on the link below:

Picture Day is also this week on Thursday, the 17th.

Please check the agenda nightly to see upcoming quizzes, tests and projects.  If all goes as planned, we will have a math quiz at the end of the week and a social studies test on Monday of the following week.

Have a great weekend and thank you for all of your support!!!!

Message from the Media Center

Hello everyone!

We have some exciting news to share regarding a partnership between Richland Library and Richland 2. This initiative is part of the ConnectED Library Challenge which is a project announced by the White House. President Obama encouraged library leaders, superintendents and mayors to join together to make sure all children in their communities have library cards. Richland Library is partnering with Richland Two to provide library cards for all students in the district, roughly 28,000.
This partnership will be announced at a press event on Thursday, September 3, along with the announcement of the shared facility being built that will house R2i2 and the Sandhills branch of Richland Library.

The cards will be given out on September 10 at our school. The cards can be activated online at www.richlandlibrary.com/connected or at any Richland Library location. The cards will be full library cards and give the students access to all the resources at the library. All normal checkout rules and policies will apply.

All children's book fines will be waived. If a student has an existing account, they can go to any branch of the library and their account will be cleared of any and all fines. If a student already has a card it will not let them activate the new one online. They must go into a branch to clear fines and add the new card.

We are introducing our blog!  The best place to find all the information about what is happening  in our classroom.  Many of the same features from our newsletter will be in the blog.  "Happening in the Classroom" contains the information about what we will be learning in the upcoming week.  "Homework" will be updated daily and contains the same information as found in our text messages from Remind.  Instructions for signing up for text messages also are found here.  The wonderful thing about the blog, we won't have to be creative with our character count! "Upcoming Events" contains a link to the school website and dates we want you to know.  "Worth a Thousand Words" will contain pictures from the classroom.  AVID and Leader in Me explain how we are using both in the classroom.
Please review the links below for messages from our guidance counselor and attendance secretary, and the school supply list.  Please send in any necessary supplies - especially the headphones.  :)

We hope you enjoy!
